The Leni-Kiko Campaign (My Story)

Phto credit to Obet De Castro

In the past I never campaign for any president. I am not apolitcal, in fact I am very political. It’s just that I felt there was no presidential candidate before that was capable of actually fulfilling the changes in our society that we hoped for. But I did voted in the past. Just choose who was the lesser evil. But I did not actively campaigned.

In the past few administation, you may have seen me actively participating in various think tanks organized by both the governement and NGOs. I was invited to be heared several times in congress. There is this misconception that being activist means “lagi kang kontra sa gobyerno.” That is because most people see activists when they are protesting a certain bill. The people don’t see that the activists are also actively working, lobbying, proposing and organizing. And most of the fruits of these hard earned labor, we are enjoying now.

During Pnoy’s administration, you may have seen me take a stand on a bill being pushed in congress about musicians. I was there generally not to make “kontra”. I was there to make sure that the bill would be an effective one, that would benefit everyone not jsut a few. If you have seen the picture of me in the office of Cong. Teddy Baguilat, I was with the group to talk to him. So that he could consider the plight of the grassroot musicians in the house bill he authored about musicians.

Fast forward today, in this electoral process, I took a stand to support and campaign for Leni Robredo and Kiko Pangilinan. The reasons I have already stated on a blog I wrote before. What I want to share to you is how I campaigned for Leni-Kiko.

I was facinated on how the campaign of Leni-Kiko team was conducted. The big rallies, house to house, etc. I was thinking on how can I actively do my part. I asked for a few campaign materials but then realized I can only distribute a few to my friends. I wanted to do something where I am most effective.

In the middle of the campaign period, a group from the catholic church came to ask for my help as they are organizing a Leni-Kiko campaign rally. Luckily I was prepared. I drafted an outline on what to do from preparation to actual. Listed positions to hire from stage managers, performers, techincal people, security, medical team to food committee. The organization that talked to me was from the Archdioses of Manila.

And so I scrambled to coordinate with every organization that I feel could help. From the Robredo People’s Council HQ and Manila, to church organizations from the progressive movement and cultural groups. The ideal venue to hold the rally was in UST, but they later realized this was a violation of the school’s policies. And so they targetted for Luneta, at the “kalabaw”. I suggested to set up a mobile stage using flatbed trucks. Sanay tayo dyan. But they felt a more permanent stage would be more appropriate as the VP will be speaking in the program. The project became on hold as the organizers became busy with the holy week.

Finally the organizers decided on a date and venue. May 1, labor day. Along with labor groups, the church plans to hold a whole day affair at the Katigbak Parkway in the Luneta grounds. This is the area near Manila Hotel. A stage will be set up and a mass will be held at 7am concelebrated by several bishops. VP Leni and Kiko along with her senatorial slate will hold their program in the morning as they have an engagement in cavite in the afternoon. The organizers wanted to continue the program until evening. So I started to call up volunteers and draw up a plan.

In the morning, during the mass, we will try to invite some music minitries to grace the mass. After the mass, church choirs and cultural groups may perform in between programs. The archdioses will run its own program where in the bishops will speak. Then VP Leni and Kiko along with her senatorial slate will run their program. After this, the stage will be set for various performers. I started gathering volunteer musicians to perform, from acoustic singer/songwriters, performance artists, visual artist/performer, duet, trio, and bands.

The organizers wanted it to have a fiesta athmosphere. It was labor day and they wanted to celebrate the St. Joseph, the worker. Lunch can be served through volunteers from various parokya. The proposal was to set up booths around the area where there can be exhibits showcasing issues of various sectors from the farmers, community, women, worker’s health, etc. In the afternoon, while performers were doing their thing on stage, teach-ins will be held on the ground where ordinary people will be enlighten with the various issues that has to be addressed by the next government. This will deepen their commitment, not only to vote for Leni-Kiko but to be an active participant in the society, as good governance relies on the participation of the people. This was to make sure that basic issues of various sectors in the society will be addressed and acted on when good government is in place. This will also defend and safeguard the gains of the people’s struggle for good governance. The whole afternoon is ideal for these teach-ins as these is not posible by simple house to house only. Discussion has to be more indepth. And to ensure their interest on the subject, it has to be relevant to the sector the participant belongs to. And in the evening, a celebration with performance of bands will be held. The whole day event would be like a festival.

I was already excited with the plan, and started working on it. Unfortunately the sad news came. The city of manila denied the application for use of the Luneta grounds. According to them, there is a scheduled event on the same day on the same venue. Although an insider informed us that we were infact the first to apply for the use of the venue. It was however strange that the permit was granted to a different activity. Politically motivated? You be the judge.

So, the organizers were looking for an alternative venue. They were eyeing for Liwasan Bonifacio or Tomas Morato between Lopez drive and the Boy Scout monument in quezon city. I started to get disappointed as I feel a lot on the planned program will be lost if we have to adjust to the new venue. Eventually I lost hope, and did not push for the whole day event. I checked on the workers’ organizations what their plans are so as to see if the idea of the whole day activity is still posible but they were just waiting for the call from the church groups who are organizing the event. Until two days before labor day, it was final, the event would be a morning affair only. It will start with a gathering in Edsa-Aurora of organized workers where they will be met by farmers who will march from ateneo along aurora blvd. A mass and the program will be held on Araneta Colesium, a first for a labor day rally. VP Leni-Kiko will speak. The workers will hold their pledge of support to the workers cause and the candidacy of VP Leni and Sen Kiko. I gave up on the idea of my original proposal.

The organizers floated the idea that my set of artists can probably perform on the miting de avance which was then proposed to be held along commonwealth ave on May 7. There could be multiple stage as the audience is expected to be massive and those far from the main stage can get an entertainement of their own. They proposed to provide a stage of our own and I agreed, toying the idea of having progressive minded artists perform in this stage, to contrast with the showbiz type performances in the main stage. I wanted the people to realize that there are performers like these, that they can learn from and emote with and not just simply get entertained.

A few days on, and the final venue for the miting de avance will be in makati. There will be a main stage and plenty of led walls which means only the program in the main stage will take effect. Still the church and other organizations managed to create their own programs in the afternoon before and after the shows in the main stage but I was not part of it anymore. These were initiatives of their own organizations. There was a prayer/concert in a nearby church, a flores de mayo event, and other similar activities. But in my opinion, these events were participated by their own people, and the call to reach out to the masses was missing.

I lost that rare opportunity to really make an event that I think will be more effective, participatory and contineous. Hindi dahil uso lang. The people are there already. All they need is guidance on were to go after this. We, who are in the know should show them how they can actively participate in the society. So that all these efforts of ours in bringing people to rallies will become fruitful. Where we can sustain that spirit of people power.

Maybe it is not yet the time. Or maybe it is not the right way. There may be other ways. To go back to our own sector, to our own communities, to our own organizations and work from there. It will be a harder longer struggle but we can definitely reach our goals. If good governance win, it will be easier but still a struggle. If we lose, it will be a harder struggle. But we will not stop.

Bakit Si Leni-Kiko?

How I met Ka Heber

Some of those discussions on music and arts with Ka Heber at the Indiepinoy office in Manila.

I first met heber in the early 90s when I went with a musician friend to visit him at his house which was then in New York st in cubao. It was also his gallery and his work area where we found him busy painting on the canvas. We discussed a few things, mostly on art, music and philosophical stuff which I am acustomed to after spending years under Ibarra dela Rosa’s class in college of Fine Arts in PWU where discussions on philosophical stuff goes on for hours.

I heard of Banyuhay ni Heber in college listening to a lot of pinoy rock. And when I got into an art organization who does stage design and visual art performances in concerts for a cause, I was able to watch the band perform several times. Notable was their performance in Quezon Memorial Circle where they had that powerful line up – brothers Heber, Levi and Jess along with drummer Flor Mendoza. I admired their songs as it was different from most pinoy rock ditties. Theirs was always about something social and political.

My visit to his pad in cubao became frequent. We later on discussed several issues about the music industry, this time in his office. At this point he was running a music label called Akasha Records and I thought I wanted to learn about how the industry works. Ka heber would then bring me to several meetings with people in the industry. Sometimes leaving me there on my own at Club Filipino, representing his company in front of CEOs and GMs of various record labels. He would also bring me to recording studios where I acted like a look out making sure that things are done right. I remember going to Abbey Road – not the studio in London, but the one in Makati. I also met a lot of his artists including one member of Mga Anak ng Tupa who made an album under his label.

My frequent stay on his office did not last long as he had to move to Banlat in Tandang Sora which was too far for my convinience. I would later on become busy with my band and we would seldom meet.

After several years, I found myself running a record label of some sort along with some muscian friends. I would later realize that it must have been Ka Heber’s ideas and our discussions which influenced me to formulate Indiepinoy, a record label for independent artists.

We would later meet again when Indiepinoy was expanding its network with organizations in the music industry and Ka Heber was organizing Malayang Ugnayan sa Industriya ng mga Komposer ng Awit or MUSIKA. We would get together to discuss issues on musicians rights and welfare. We would even go to congress and sit on a congressional hearings when musicians rights are involved. Our meetings were held either in my house in Sampaloc, Manila or in his place in Banlat, Tandang Sora. Most of our discussion now were more concrete than those we discussed before in New York st., Cubao. With the help of Skarlet we were picking up pieces of the puzzle to formulate a stronger guild that will represent the musicians and the composers. Ka Heber tried to convince me to join his group MUSIKA and give it a strong leadership but he knew I was already busy with Indiepinoy and understood my cause. So he did not really insisted as we can work together anyway. But I felt that he was building MUSIKA to be more than an organization, maybe a CMO of some sort or probably a guild. He had with him personalities in the pinoy rock scene along with a group of new breed songwriters and singers. I felt he wanted me to help him expand his group with the same extensive number of members Indiepinoy had at that time.

We did organize a few concerts including one held at the Rizal Auditorium’s Concert at the Park. This was to commemorate Bonifacio’s 150th birthday. A few more meetings were held here and there, including one organized by atty Rod Domingo, the lawyer who was able to win a class suit and recover millions for Marcos victims. This was attended by really influential personalities and the agenda was quite radical especially having in the attendance, people who had first hand experience of corruption and brutality in the music industry. Ka Heber showed me how the industry really looks like. The good and the bad.

This is how I met Ka Heber. We were both organizers and we both have visions of how the industry should work and to whom should it serve. Most people will see the genius of his songs. I see how he felt about the people who make such songs. He was ahead of me and he knows more than me. Even if I would deny it, deep inside me I know he was a big influence.

Later on I would hear several stories from different people about Ka Heber. Including that one story Emil Sanglay told me of how they had an argument with Ka Heber and he left him in the middle of the grassland. I am not the one to judge about those stories I heard. He is only human anyway.

But I will surely miss him.

On Independent Artists

(This was originally posted on the Indiepinoy blog located at www.indiepinoymusic.com datesd april 9, 2020)

In 2008, five bands grouped together to find means to distribute their music on the prevailing trend of the time – mobile distribution. They realized that corporate would only talk to labels who represent hundreds of artists. The content providers do not want to waste their time talking to each and every independent artists coming into their doorstep. And so the five artists gathered more to form a group that will represent the independent artists and have a say in the music corporate world. Indiepinoy, the indie label and music company was born. The five bands grew into over a thousand independent Filipino artists.

This was the time digital was coming of age. Resources which were formerly exclusive to major labels due to expense started to become popular. Musicians can now create content (audio and visual) at par with those created by big production groups before but this time done in their own bedroom or backyard. Despite the development of digital technology, some institutions in the music business remained monopolized or at least dominated by the major labels who still firmly holds its place in the industry. Big budgeted promotions, radio and other media dominated by the campaigns of major labels are evidences that the independent artist could not compete.

Indiepinoy knows better. It has been proven thru history that musical tribes and fads started not from the mainstream but from the underground. Why would you then limit yourselves in an arena where you cannot win over the bullies. Go into the alternative route. Musicians of today have a wider arena to play with in promoting their music. There are a lot of emerging grounds where music can strive to become popular. And being creative can give birth to more alternative venues. On these arenas, your power to succeed is not limited to your budget. And you have equal footing with the big corporations in launching campaigns for your music.

This is what Indiepinoy lives and breathes. Over the years, Indiepinoy has explored various ways to promote the music of its artists. It has been actively representing the independent artists in various community activities, including having a presence in the Philippine Congress when issues affecting the musicians are discussed. Indiepinoy has also introduced itself to various corporate activities in an effort to find new means to promote independent Filipino music.

What differs Indiepinoy from other record labels?

Still indiepinoy stands as a music label. So what differs Indiepinoy from other record labels? First of all, Indiepinoy does not intend to gain big profits as a label. It was created by artists whose only intention was to have their music distributed. It wants its artists to be the one to gain economically in the marketing efforts Indiepinoy indulges. Indiepinoy wants to stress that it wants its artists to be independent. Thus it encourages its artist to explore means on developing and marketing music on their own. Indiepinoy can give guidance only based on its won experiences. There are a lot of indiepinoy artists who are now standing on their own, embracing the true essence of being indie. Experiences from these artists are additional inputs that helps shape up the development of independent Filipino music. Indiepinoy still include these artists in its projects of promoting independent Filipino music. This is what indiepinoy was really made of: helping each other. Indiepinoy is only described as a label to conform with the industry standards since there is no other description that will fit.

What does it take to be an independent Filipino artist?

Indiepinoy realizes that for artists to survive, one has to find his/her own audience. And when you get to have a specific audience, be true to them. They are your following. Do not attempt to go global or national without having your own crowd first. Your crowd can be your community where you belong, school or company, a particular audience who follows you on your gigs, followers in your online presence, etc. From there on you can expand as far as you are able to. But it is still important to maintain your roots, your original audience. Because they are the ones who believed in your music even when nobody else heard you yet. Having this, you can now stand on your own. Tools in the music industry can be learned and indiepinoy can provide guidance afterwards.

Who Am I

(This is a school work in my 2nd year of high school in DWU. The paper was dated March 9, 1982)

I am Manuel, the son of Lorenzo and Auxiliadora. I am the youngest child in the family. I am a boy, a man, a person, a human, an earthling and a living thing. I am a sanguine person, a person who stands in the middle between the rich and the poor, strong and weak, the young and old, the fearful and the brave, the bad and the good. I am fearful of what I do not know, but I am brave enough to try anything new. Some of the time, I may be bad but most of the time I try to be good. I know I am strong enough to stand on my own beliefs. ButI can also be affected by the opinion of others. I am not so young that I cannot do things for myself, but I am not old enough to be able to take care of myself by myself. I am myself.

Not an Ordinary Day at the Office

(This article was a seat work in an English literature class in PWU around 1989).

She entered the office along with her mother. It was almost noon and most of my office mates were down at the cafeteria eating their lunch. The office is almost bare except for some medical equipment we use to service the needs of workers from various industrial firms in Manila.

Here I am standing in front of them. Her mother did most of the talking. I was as if she could not speak. The mother introduced her daughter as elena, a 16 year old factory worker from a large textile factory in Valenzuela. According to her mother, elena was abuse by her employer less than a week ago.

“Elena was fired when she forgot to load a fresh spool of thread into the machine she was assigned to handle.” Explains the mother. “She pleaded for mercy and her employer agreed to hire her as a maid in his home instead.”

“During the first two days in her employer’s home, she was locked-up, beaten and raped. It was such an ordeal which affectedalmost every inch of her body and mind. It was a good thing she was able to break free when sympathetic neighbors heard her screams and notified the police.”

I could not believe such things actually happen. I looked at her bruises. They were almost everywhere. But then she does not react whenever her mother touches her arms. It is as if she could not feel a thing. Her eyes blank. Her nostrils were big and pulsating. I think deep inside her she was crying.

Then I stood up and told both of them to wait inside a room. I have to call the doctor who will attend to their needs.

How to clean Toilet (sic)

(This article is a school seat work about linear process explanation. It is a group work by Nolit Abanilla, Ma. Jeremiah T. Balbuena and Ma. Alma P. Duron for an english literature class in PWU sometime in 1989.)

Cleaning the toilet is always a drag. You must degrade yourself, kneel down and do the scrubbing. But before that, you must consider somethings.

First, see to it that your windows are closed. You don’t want to let your handsome neighbor see you in your most humiliating position.

Then you must use an appropriate detergent. Do not use your imported “floral scented” soap on the white porcelain just because you want it to smell good. A good active cleanser with deodorizer will do. Dash a few of these into the john. You might need some strong acid or toilet bowl cleaner. Pour some of these generously, and set aside for a few minutes.

Now you can start scrubbing. Scrub very well and do not leave any space unsubscrubed (sic). Make that brownish gray “holy seat” look sparkling white. And feel the glory of that miraculous change.

After scrubbing, you must wash away the soap. You can wipe bowl (sic) with a clean rag if you wish.

Finally, your toilet is clean. Now you can call your 5-year-old brother to sprinkle the toilet with god-knows-what in a manner most playful little boys do.

(Apparently the teacher did not like the story as she gave the piece a low grade of 2.50 with a note saying “topic is very ordinary.” But I think she should have given us a better grade as the purpose of the seat work was to demonstrate linear process explanation, and we did a good job on it regardless of what topic we choose. Well, you cannot please everybody.)

Combat Apathy

(Unpublished article intended for Philwomenian in 1988)

Apathy has always been an obstacle to Social Development. In this world of conflicts, apathy is never absent, serving its own interest. Such a selfish path one would take.

Apathy is defined as one’s avoidance to be involved in any struggle or conflict. Apathy include liberalism which follows the reconciliation philosophy. We all have heard people say “We must be fair, we must listen to both sides of the story, there is always right and wrong on both sides, If we could only get people to talk to one another and sort out their misunderstandings and misconceptions, conflict could be resolved.” It sounds like a genuine concern for fairness and justice, yet later we will find out that liberalism stands for unprincipled peace.

NOT ALL CONFLICTS CAN BE RECONCILED

We must take in mind that not all conflicts are based on misunderstanding and must be reconciled. In some conflict, one side is right and the other is wrong, one side is being unjust and oppressive and the other is suffering injustice and oppression. Thus one must take side. Being Christians, we are not supposed to try to reconcile good and evil, just and injustice. We are supposed to do away with evil, injustice and sin.

Neutrality is not always possible. In cases of conflict due to injustice and oppression, neutrality is totally impossible. If we do not take sides with the oppressed, then we are unintentionally taking sides with the oppressors. Since being neutral hides the nature of the conflict. The injustice continues and everybody is made to feel that the injustice doesn’t matter because the tension and conflict have been reduced. It keeps the oppressed quiet and passive and brings about a kind of pseudo-reconciliation without justice.

It is wrong to assume that tension and conflict are worse evils than injustice and oppression. It only shows one’s cowardliness to confront conflicts. They are those who are not convinced of the need for change and lack of hope. They rather flee to escapism from the realities of injustice and conflicts.

Thus, it shows that being liberal is being apathetic to realities, and being neutral is a way of siding with the oppressor. In a conflict if one side is right we must recognize this and side with them, just as Jesus sided with the poor. If the other side is wrong and in power, we must oppose them and dethrone them from power. We must realize the real root of many conflicts – The oppressive structure being implemented by the rich. God didn’t actually hated the rich. What he simply meant, is that he wants to pull the rich and powerful from their thrones, from their position in the society, because the structures of the society are unjust and oppressive (Luke 1:52:53)

God said “Love our enemies.” This does not mean for us to convert the rich and those in power to stop the oppression. The only effective way of loving our enemies is to engage in action that will destroy the system that makes them our enemies. In other words, for the sake of love and for the sake of true peace, we must side with the poor and the oppressed and confront the rich and powerful, and join the struggle against what they stand for and what they are defending.

Remember, God wants peace that is based on truth, justice and love and not the superficial peace and unity that compromise truth, covers over the injustices and that is usually settled on for thoroughly selfish purposes.

Advance peace based on social justice and not on apathy.

‘IWASAN ANG CLIMATE OF COMPETITION SA MUSIKA’ – NOLIT ABANILLA

(Published in theophirianchronicles.com, by Ravenson Biason, October 6, 2019)

When someone uploads a video of a cover song to youtube, mayroon itong tinatawag na Content ID system.

Pwedeng (1) allow ng publisher na ma-stream ang (cover) song but publisher will get all the monetization from the video, (2) not allow the song to be streamed at all and mute it from the video, (3) Block the video, (4) Restrict the viewing in certain teritiories/countries or block on certain platforms.

At syempre to show courtesy, dapat i-acknowledge ng singer yung song mo at ikaw as a songwriter.

My point here is, be aware but dont be alarmed too much regarding copyright issues of your songs on digital platform or social media in general. The internet is not a jungle of theives with no rules or police. The structures follow rules and are even more specific according to country.

So how do you get your song included on Youtube’s Content ID system? Release them to digital stores via aggregator thru your publisher.

Kung ikaw naman ay mag cocover ng song at ipopost mo sa Youtube, be aware of the rights that Youtube is allowing you to do. First be courteous and acknowledge the songwriter. Pwede din the original singer kung di mo alam ang songwriter, usually the songwriter will bow to that and accept your acknowledgement. Be aware that you are not doing the cover version to earn money.

Kung gusto mo kumita then you should get mechanical rights to record the song and release it for selling either in physical cd or in digital stores. This will get your percentage of profit when your version is uploaded to youtube as it will now be included in the content ID system. Kung ang song mo ay kasama dun sa nag option to block or not allow other to cover your song, sorry ka nalang at pwedeng ma take down yung cover song video mo or ma mute. Lets respect the songwriter nalang if they choose this option for whatever reason they have. Karapatan nila un.

Remember hindi masama mag cover ng song. Others do this to have their take on the song. Others do this as a way to get popular. Others do it for whatever reason they have.

One way or another nagiging bahagi ito sa buhay natin. At napakinabangan natin ito. Salamat sa kumanta at nag- compose.

ANO ANG DAPAT PALAKASIN? (Indie music at hindi ang mainstream OPM)

(Published on Philippineone.com a blogsite about positive change, connection, a conduit by which free stream of ideas and designs for change can flow incessantly. We aim to enthusiastically REBUILD a nation that is ripe for RECONSTRUCTION and REFORMATION. Dec 25, 2019 by Ravenson Biason.)

Ano ang dapat palakasin? Ang indie music and mainstream OPM?

INDIEPINOY- EMPOWERING THE INDEPENDENT FILIPINO ARTISTS.
